Fat ... So?

In schools across the country, kids who are heavier than their classmates experience size bias from peers and adults. And school health programs can sometimes hurt more than they help. Experts from the size-acceptance community, whose views are often omitted from health debates, offer a fresh perspective: eat healthy foods, stay active, and don't worry about your size.

This short film illustrates how our ideas of beauty have become distorted by the media. It features the evolution.

Fat
This PBS FRONTLINE program explores the causes of the obesity crisis, looking at how media and cultural ideals, as well as biology and genetics, influence our relationship with food. Part of the program examines the pain and suffering of obese people who confront fat prejudice everyday.

Self Image: The Fantasy, The Reality
This PBS In the Mix program explores the American obsession with body image, which is driving teens to diet, use steroids, develop dangerous eating disorders and create a lifelong cycle of low self-esteem.

THE TEEN FILES FLIPPED: Tolerance
This MTV program explores the origins and characteristics of hate through the eyes of two teens: one, intolerant of obesity, and the other, offended by homosexuality. Misled into believing that they were chosen as the two hosts of a new MTV show, the teenagers find themselves in situations that force them to come face-to-face with their own insecurities, bigotry and hatred.
